A one visit root canal, also known as single-visit endodontics or same-day root canal therapy, is a dental procedure that aims to treat an infected tooth in just one appointment. Traditionally, root canals would require multiple visits to complete the treatment process. However, advancements in dental technology and techniques have made it possible for dentists to perform the entire procedure in a single sitting.
First, your dentist will carefully examine your tooth to determine if you are a candidate for a one visit root canal. X-rays may be taken to assess the extent of the infection. If it is determined that you can benefit from this treatment, the procedure will begin. To start, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Once numb, they will create an access hole in your tooth using specialized tools. This allows them to reach the infected pulp chamber and root canals.
Next, using small files, your dentist will remove any infected tissue and clean out the diseased pulp from inside the tooth roots. They may also shape and enlarge the root canals to prepare them for filling material later on. Once all traces of infection have been removed, your dentist will fill the cleaned-out space with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This helps seal off any remaining bacteria and prevent future reinfection.
Depending on the condition of your tooth, a temporary or permanent restoration, such as a dental crown, may be placed over it to protect its structure and restore functionality.
